“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” – St. Francis of Assisi
I was sitting in a hunting blind in the early morning waiting for the sun to come up. As the first ray of light exploded over the hill, the darkness quickly retreated into the woods and shadows. Light quickly won and darkness was vanquished. It was amazing how much difference just a little light made. Darkness could not compete, light would not be defeated.
The metaphor holds for our spiritual journey as well. Darkness tries to creep into our lives and take ahold of us. Those things that cause us to doubt, to sin, to hurt one another, to lie, to cheat, to steal….all threaten to keep us out of the light. But just as the early morning sunrise, a single beam can drive away many shadows. Some days you need to seek out those beams of light to hold at bay your darkness. Be in community, seek others to help you stay in the light. Some days you are the reflector of the light to someone in need. Be in the community, help others to stay in the light.
No matter if you reflect the light or need to be lit up by the light or both, one promise holds true. The source of the light is Christ and He is the light for the whole world.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12
